A former Miss Egypt, a skillful TV presenter and a host accustomed to life under the spotlight, how did it all begin?
Speaking about my experience as Miss Egypt, it began in 1998 when my friends and family encouraged me to join the pageant. I was 18 back then when I won the title. It was a great experience full of training that played a great role in building my character. Then came a whole new experience; Miss universe. It was held in Honolulu, Hawaii, a beautiful place with amazing people and I won’t forget the minute I landed in the airport when I first heard the word “Aloha” and was greeted with flowers. The way it was all organized was impeccable and people were interested to learn more about our culture and civilization. I was filled with honor and felt really proud to be representing my country and to be given the opportunity to correct whatever misconceptions that people of different cultures have about us as Egyptians. After becoming Miss Egypt, I received several offers in modeling, in addition to TV commercials and video clips including one with Ragheb Alama. Besides the exposure I gained from working in front of the camera, I began to explore my working potential behind the camera as well. I worked in art production, styling, and produced several campaigns with a company owned by Hani Osama and Hadi El Bagouri. I’ve found myself more interested to the behind-the-camera-world, and carried on for 6 years.
Having worked in advertising, both in front and behind the camera, in addition to producing several campaigns; when have you decided to focus more on TV programs rather than advertising?
Well, I realized that the timing of productions were no longer suitable for me, especially that I was in the process of getting engaged. I began at OTV when I was offered a segment in a program. In spite the fact that I had experience in front of the camera, I felt a bit shy and hesitant towards this step because speaking in front of the camera is more difficult than modeling in video clips. I decided to take the chance and I received a lot of support and encouragement from the team when they noticed my potential. This TV program really felt like my second home.
You make very iconic fashion statements and stand out with a remarkable sense of style. What’s your take on the fashion scene currently and how would you describe your fashion identity?
First, it’s worth mentioning that I have a fashion guru and a trendsetter living with me at home; and that is my husband. He is truly iconic and stands out with a unique sense of style. Speaking about my own style, I follow only the fashion trends that suit me and reflect my identity. As much as I keep an eye on the latest trends, timeless pieces will always be my go-to. Simplicity is my motto when it comes to fashion, and I believe that less is more. In my opinion, the fashion scene in Egypt has changed tremendously and among the many versatile trends that keep on coming up, it’s better if people focus on reflecting their unique identity in their style in order to stand out in the crowd.
We’ve also noticed you’re a fitness enthusiast, is this a way of life you’ve adopted for a long time?
Fitness is one of the main focuses in my life. Whether it is yoga, gymnastics, or cardio; working out is essential for me. Ever since I was young, I’ve always been keen on incorporating exercise into my everyday life. I am the type of person who prefers to exercise outdoors. It is truly invigorating and far more enjoyable when you work out while getting in touch with nature rather than being confined by walls of the gym and the crowd.
Besides fashion, fitness, and the media; what else are you passionate about?
There are a lot of things actually, of which makeup is one. I used to be a makeup artist since I was 18, and I’ve done a lot of professional bridal and special occasion makeup. At 2009, I got certified and started my own studio specialized in permanent makeup and tattooing, as well as microblading. I don’t think of it as just a business but rather something that I enjoy doing. I can consider this studio as my getaway. Another thing I’m also passionate about is cooking. I love to try new food from different cuisines, especially while I’m travelling. I find pleasure in exploring signature dishes from different parts around the world. Treating myself to a delicious and delectable meal is quite an indulgence for me.
Any projects or dreams to be accomplished coming up on the horizon?
There is a dream I’ve been working on the past five years and I’m truly grateful and excited to see it coming to life this year. Having my own seafood restaurant has been something I’ve had in mind for a long time and I’m very glad to have partners who are equally committed and share the same passion with me. I was born in Alexandria, and this has made me connected to the sea and its wonders. Having said that, and in addition to my love for seafood; the concept of this restaurant was created. In my opinion, the best seafood is that we cook at home. My objective is to offer the dinners this Egyptian home-cooked seafood experience with world-class services. Launching in North Coast and partnering up with Ganzoury and Karim Nabil, I can assure we will bring something unique to the dining scene.
Being a mother of two, with different interests, and with a successful career; how do you maintain a well-balanced life?
Being a mother of two is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Spending time with my kids is a top priority for me, and I focus on working my schedule around their daily routine and activities. I want to bring up disciplined and ethical kids who will grow up understanding the concept of being responsible individuals and who can have an impact on the society. Being a mother is a full-time job on its own. So having a career besides being a mother isn’t easy and can get challenging at times. But having my kids growing up to see me focused on having a career, will help them learn that it is important for each individual to find something they love and to focus on it. It is a fact that we live a very fast-paced life, but it is also important to slow down, pause for a moment, and find time for ourselves. When it comes to me, meditation has really helped me find the harmony in my life and created a balance.
In the modern era, women struggle to succeed at being strong leaders, happy mothers, while also find time for their wellbeing. In your opinion what’s the mistake that many women fall into while trying to have a life well-lived?
Unfortunately many women in Egypt tend to forget about themselves and put themselves last on the list in their attempt to make the whole family happy. More often than not, they lose themselves among the way and may feel empty from within for having no purpose or a dream to follow. Being a devoted and a loving mother doesn’t stand in the way of finding your passion in life and working for it. On the contrary, if anything, this will help the kids find a role model to look up to. When it comes to marital life, I believe that it is healthy for the relationship when the woman has a job and various other interests that she can fill her free time with. I believe that every woman needs to take care of herself and her wellbeing first in order to be able to look after her family Overrunning yourself will only get you drained.
What fills your heart with joy?
My kids, God bless them.
If there’s one advice you’d give out for women who want to make the best out of their lives and to fill it with purpose what would it be?
Every person gets their sense of fulfillment differently, and every woman should reflect deeply on the things she’s passionate about and ask herself “What is my purpose in life?” We lead different paths in life; find yours and pursue it. Believe in your abilities, believe in your dreams, and with all your heart follow them. Give out to the people in need, the world is filled with those who need to feel cared for and loved, and that in itself can give you a strong feeling of happiness and fulfillment.
