There have always been some certain misconceptions that we associate with working moms, a depiction of a woman who is always in a race against time with pretty too much on her plate, and barely any time on her hands for her own well-being. In that very fast-paced world we live in, some women have thought that a work-life balance is a goal that is almost unattainable, but that is not the case if you do things Sarah Taha’s way. Impressed by how she’s always put together while also being a mother with a successful career, Sarah Taha speaks to us about the secrets that lead to a successful and well-balanced life that transcends to something deeper than just salon visits or picture-perfect outfits.
1.From Being a Dentist to Egypt’s most renowned Fashion Blogger, How did this all happen?
It all began with an immense passion for fashion. Going back to my school days, I was voted ‘Best Dressed’ in my prom and ever since that day I created my own individual identity in fashion with a remarkable taste. During college my friends have asked for my assistance when it comes to shopping and styling. Even before the concept of fashion bloggers and stylists took this field by storm, I helped my friends in styling their outfits, or give them guidance while shopping. This has made me realize that I do have an iconic taste in fashion, especially that when it comes to shopping, I always look for unique pieces, and statement pieces that stand out. This is something I owe to the well-travelled person I am which has given me the exposure to discover more about fashion and to get to know about brands even before they arrived to Egypt. I took it from there and I decided to take styling professionally, I’ve run many projects in magazines and TV programs. Studying for my masters was a reason I’ve put styling on hold for a while but I’ve never stopped blogging on my free time.
2.Besides fashion, what else are you passionate about?
Well, I love cooking, and I enjoy doing the grocery shopping myself because I really focus on healthy eating and picking fresh food for my meals. I also love series and movies, especially the old ones, the black and white ones. What I love the most is definitely music; I just can’t imagine that anyone can live without music. Music is a way of expression, we grieve with music and we laugh with music. It is what helps us embrace all our moods. Sports as well really help me to get through my days no matter how tough, in addition of course to helping me stay in shape.
3.For a very busy woman like you, in addition to being a mom, how do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?
I always try and find my own equilibrium. I believe that the key is mastering your own time. Never has anyone been able to succeed without time-management, smart planning, and the ability to prioritize. It is a very busy city we live in and there’s always something happening around. With all this hustle and bustle it becomes hard for people to focus on the important things in life. I believe that being a doctor has significantly helped me with being better at planning. I always work according to a plan; I think things through so I always have a full picture of how I spend my time. It is important to be organized, and I don’t really get people who brag about being messy. It is one thing to be spontaneous, and a totally different thing to just be disorganized. My advice for everyone is to try and find their balance and to stay away from distraction, to commit to a plan, and most importantly to jot important things down. Never underestimate the power of journaling; it is one of the most effective tools that will keep you at the top of your game.
4.Looking up to how always glamorous and put together you are, we are impressed by how you keep this all together. Can you share with us your beauty secrets?
Leading a healthy lifestyle definitely plays a major role. Eating healthy and exercising contributes to my overall well-being, both emotionally and physically. And whenever it happens that I yield to some sweets cravings, I make sure that I focus on a strict detox plan for three days. There’s another important thing which is sleeping well. I make sure to get my beauty sleep, I never go to bed past midnight, and I’m an early-riser. It is important not to mistake a healthy life for a boring one. You can crave different food sometimes, you can stay up late and dance the night away at parties; the key is in keeping a good balance. So in a nutshell I’d say my secret is, eat well, sleep well, plenty of water, exercise, and of course make the best of your life and leave space for fun.
5.What’s your idea of quality ‘me time’?
Spa, spa, and again spa! Nothing beats the feeling of being pampered with some manicure and pedicure and relaxing with a good massage. It is the best gift you can reward yourself with after some really hard work. Always create some quality time for yourself to chill and rejuvenate.
6.Now coming to motherhood, in your opinion what are the keys to positive and successful parenting?
Be right there and always be by their side through all their life stages, watch them grow and work on developing a strong bond and connection with them. Educate yourself about parenting, read a lot, understand the changes they undergo in different ages. Time and love are the most precious gifts you can give to your kids, and each age is special in its own way, for one day they will be too old for you to carry them the way you carry them as babies. Watch them take their first step, and say their first word, and don’t miss a thing. It is my utmost priority to create a pile of memories with my son.
7.If you are going to give a piece of advice to all the busy mums out there what would it be?
Just work as per a plan and manage your time. This is the way to life-balance and success.
Now, we would love to learn more details about your taste in fashion…
8.How would you describe your fashion style?
I would say it is versatile. I don’t stick to one style. Some days I wake up in the mood for being minimalistic, so I just wear black. Other days I feel like dressing to the
nines so I go a bit edgy playing around with patterns and experimenting new layering styles. It all depends on the mood basically, and most importantly I wear whatever makes me feel comfortable in my own skin.
9.Your favorite fashion designers, local and international?
On an international level, I love Alexander McQueen, and Isabel Marant; the layering, the texturing, and the colors make their designs absolutely brilliant. Localy Kojak is definitely my favorite, I also love Norine Farah, Amna Elshandaweely, and Amina Khalil.
10.Your best perfume?
There are two actually. My favorite morning perfume is Tova, as for an evening perfume, Narciso Rodriguez without a doubt! This is the scent of seduction; it is timeless, elegant, and mesmerizing.
11.In a world where people blindly follow fashion trends, what advice would you give women to stand out with a personal fashion identity?
Listen to your instinct and wear what makes you comfortable. If you wear something just because it is fashionable but you don’t feel comfortable in it, simply you won’t look good. Follow the fashion trends that represent your identity, and wear what makes you feel like yourself rather than a copy of someone else. Feel the piece you are wearing, let it speak to you.
